History

Swedish massage was developed in the beginning of XIX century by Pehr Henrik Ling, Professor of Therapeutic Exercises as a treatment to improve blood circulation and influence lymph glands. The system is based on the European perceptions of human anatomy and physiology as well as on the system of traditional manipulation. Ling founded the first massage school where he taught six basic techniques that he invented and that are used in massage to the present day.

Effleurage – light strokes

Petrissage – applying pressure and light tingling

Friction – circular palm and finger movements

Vibration – oscillating and vibrating movements

Percussion – brief finger strokes

Swedish massage is used as a basis for other treatments that is why, for the patient the treatment might seem different from one therapist to the other.

Treatment Techniques

Massage is given on the massage table, while the patient is covered with a sheet, except for the body part that the therapist is working on. During the session the latter uses oils and various massage techniques. Each technique has its own specific goal and can be done with a different intensity depending on specific reaction of the patient. If necessary the therapist awards a problematic part longer time. Never breaking away from the patient’s body, the therapist interchanges techniques gradually.

Aiming at better blood circulation, Swedish massage at the same time enhances cardiac function. Therefore, the therapist’s movements are passed over in the direction from extremities to the body centre. Intense blood inflow saturates the muscles and detoxifies them.

The massage system can vary, and depending on the patient’s complaints, movement can be light or intense, shallow or deep. Swedish massage is a basic technique that is usually combined with other types and therefore can be versatile.
