Traditional Thai Massage

Traditional Thai massage branches out of traditional Thai medicine and is used for healing and finding balance for the body. Don’t confuse it with erotic Thai massage. The theory of traditional Thai massage is based on the conception of invisible energetic lines (so-called Sense), going through the body. Thai massage stands for the complete understanding of the human’s well-being, influencing the spirit and body, granting means to awaken energy in the body and to release it from pain and illnesses.

Origins and Essence of Traditional Thai Massage

Traditional Thai massage derives from ancient Indian medicine (Ayurveda) and includes techniques used in yoga, acupressure and Chinese massage that was introduced in Thailand thousands of years ago.

Deep meditation is one of the features of Thai massage. The crucial aspect of all Thai massage techniques is based on the impact upon energy lines. Thai massage centers around sense experience. The patient opens up at such a profound level of reality that they are able to sense the presence of tension that binds one’s body permanently. Therefore, the purpose of the treatment is to nudge the patient towards the state that allows them to discover their ability to feel deeper sensations.

A full session of Thai massage lasts for 2-3 hours. During this whole time the patient experiences the feeling of freedom and relaxation as opposed to anxiety , which according to Buddhism cause every kind of pain.

There are two tendencies of Thai massage. Massage of the southern tendency (taught at the temple in Wat Pho, Bangkok) is based on the technique of applying pressure and work with energy channels. Massage of the northern tendency (taught at the ancient hospital in Chiang Mai) is founded on stretching and joint kneading techniques.

These techniques share a common philosophical foundation that includes four states of consciousness (Brahmavihara):

  • Metta: Benevolence
  • Karuna: Compassion
  • Mudita: Empathetic joy
  • Upekkha:  Equanimity

Techniques

Thai massage, like others based on Chinese medicine, takes into account energy lines of the body (SENS). The massage is given on a padded mat on the floor. The patient should be wearing comfortable long-sleeved clothes that wouldn’t hinder movements. Massage is based on point techniques, applying pressure to different parts of the body along with kneading of joints, stretching and kneading of muscles without any oils. The therapist uses his hands, fingers, feet, elbows, knees and forearms.

Traditionally a session begins with the therapist working on the feet of the patient who is lying on the back. Afterwards, the professional attends to external sides of the body proceeding to the central parts. The next stage is carried out with the patient lying on his stomach. The final step involves the patient in sitting position. Massage of head and face crowns the session. In addition, there is a sideways technique.

It is recommended that this massage lasts for  2 hours, but it can be reduced or prolonged at the wish of the patient.

Purpose of Traditional Thai Massage

The purpose of the therapy lies in the influence on the energy state of the human spirit and body to restore balance and harmony. From the perspective of the oriental healing philosophy, health depends on a good flow of life energy in our bodies therefore people get ill, when that flow is blocked. Thai massage contributes to destruction of the blockings accumulated during a long time in the lymph system and stimulates blood and lymph circulation, detoxifying the organism. This therapy eases pain connected to orthopaedic problems such as backache, radicular pain, tennis elbow, painful joints as well as stress symptoms like insomnia, migraine etc. It boosts the immune system and helps to prevent diseases.

Who Should Give It a Chance?

Traditional Thai massage is recommended to everyone, since it leads to profound relaxation, boosts energy and creates the feeling of freedom. The massage interests people who wish to sense the delightful state of nirvana and those who have to handle some health complaints. The massage is suitable for people not willing to get undressed or use oils.
